As a freelance writer, one of the hardest parts is coming up with
ideas. If only gathering ideas was like going to the grocery store, plucking items off the shelf, crossing off a shopping list as you go. Some thoughts on how I fill my "grocery cart":
Read the labels.Read anything and everything. Start with the newspaper to stay current with what's going in the world, especially locally where you live. Read newspapers, magazines, blogs, and books. Knowing what others are writing about may spark news ideas, can let you know what's already been covered and provides examples of writing (good and bad.)
Chat with other customers. The people you know (friends, colleagues, that fellow cafe patron who always seems to get in line right before you) probably do interesting things. They can fill you in on events or trends they notice that would make newsworthy stories. Listen and absorb. Those in your circle can also help with brainstorming, mention a topic your’re toying with and they’re likely to add to it, giving it more angles or a fresh insight.
Know what you like to eat.Your hobbies and interests may turn you on to an interesting story idea They also give you an edge in pitching a niche market because you have "insider" knowledge on the subject already.
Make the trip.Get out of your house/office. Attending festivals, concerts, performances, or simply wandering the streets often provides you with material. Besides, its healthy to ecape that solitary realm self-employed freelancers often find themselves in.
